Sustainable footwear brand, Rothy’s, opening on the Upper West Side

Rothy’s — the San Francisco-based shoe company that uses yarn made from recycled plastic water bottles and post-consumer recycled materials — opens at 181 Columbus Ave., at West 68th Street. The site previously housed Variazioni, which closed at the end of 2021.

Meet the skinny at Rothy’s: 3D knits. “Over 125 million single-use plastic bottles have been turned into our signature yarn, which we use to make all of our products,” Rothy’s website states. “And we repurposed 400,000 pounds of ocean-bound marine plastic (collected within 30 miles of shore) using it to knit our bags and accessories.”

This powerful fine weave has earned Rothy respect with celebrities like Katie Holmeswho told InStyle that sustainability is really important to her: “It’s on my mind every day, especially having a kid and just being a human being…It’s important to think about what we’re doing. to our world. I don’t buy a lot of clothes and I try to be very balanced in my life.

Celebrities aside, Rothy’s, which was founded in 2012 and launched in 2016 by Stephen Hawthornthwaite and Roth Martin, is as much a hit for its comfort as it is for its eco-consciousness. Last month, CNN named Rothy’s to its list of “15 Sustainable Clothing Brands to Help You Feel Better About Your Closet.”

The brand has evolved to offer handbags in 2020 and a men’s line in 2021 to complement its increasingly popular women’s footwear category, which offers shoes ranging from $125 to $185 with selections like The espadrille and The driver.

Rothy’s is also offering a 20% discount for nurses, doctors, other licensed healthcare professionals, first responders and teachers on a pair of shoes found at rothys.com. All shoes on the site are eligible for a discount, unless otherwise stated. Learn more here.

This upcoming opening will add to the presence of durable footwear on Columbus Ave, with Allbirds opening a spot nearby last year.

We contacted the Rothy’s team to find out when they were planning to open. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
