Tom Cotton picks a horse in the NJ-5 GOP primary
US Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), a potential 2024 presidential candidate, is taking sides in the Republican congressional primary in New Jersey’s 5th District with an endorsement for Nick De Gregorio.
Both Cotton and De Gregorio are veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“Nick is the strong, conservative fighter we need in Congress to restore American values for our children,” Cotton said. “Having led hundreds of Marines overseas into combat, Nick has both the right experience to make sound decisions in Congress and the integrity to stand up for what is right.”
Cotton has previously weighed in on the New Jersey House primaries. He was an early supporter of Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-Morris Plains) in his successful 2018 primary to replace incumbent Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen.
In his endorsement, Cotton shot the starter De Gregorio hopes to face this fall.
“Families in the Fifth District are sick of Josh Gottheimer making empty promises as he backs a radical liberal agenda that is emptying our wallets, opening up our borders and kicking parents out of the classroom,” Cotton said.
De Gregorio takes on former investment banker Frank Pallotta in the June 7 Republican primary. Pallotta is making his second run for Congress after losing to Gottheimer in 2020.
Bergen County Republicans support De Gregorio, but Pallotta has support from Passaic and Sussex Republicans.
“I couldn’t be more grateful to have the support of a true leader who has seen tough fights both on the battlefield and in Congress,” De Gregorio said. “I look forward to working with Senator Cotton as a colleague in the House to strengthen America’s standing in the world and reverse the disastrous effects of the Biden-Gottheimer agenda on families in the Fifth District.”
